Everything is Embedded
Embedded computer systems are omnipresent in everyday life, often without us even noticing their presence. Computers are nowadays incorporated into a vast variety of objects, ranging from a coffee machine over a car to a person’s heart pacemaker. However, to improve these systems they require an ever growing amount of resources.
The Intelligent Embedded Systems department (IES) focuses on research, development and advancement of such ‘invisible’ computer systems. We specifically aim to create resource constrained but intelligently acting devices in the Internet of Things.

2024-02-18 CCF Journal Top 20 Article about Elastic AI ranked 12th
In the renowned Springer journal CCF Transactions on Pervasive Computing and Interaction, our article Elastic AI: system support for adaptive machine learning in pervasive computing systems has recently been ranked 12th in the list of most downloaded articles.
We are very pleased that our research article has now been downloaded over 3264 times and hope that we can inspire even more people with our ElasticAI approach in the future!
2024-01-29 Disputation Congratulations to Sam Erbati
We are pleased to announce that our external PhD student Sam Erbati successfully defended his disputation under the title "Towards the optimal orchestration of service function chains to enable ultra-reliable low latency communications in an NFV-enabled network" on January 29th.
We congratulate him on this milestone and wish him all the best for future challenges!
2023-12-06 Project meeting VDI expert recommendation underway
The results of the RIWWER project are not just intended to benefit Duisburg, but also to contribute to the digitalisation process of wastewater management throughout Germany.
For this reason, the project members as well as representatives of the water management sector met to launch a VDI expert recommendation on the matter.
Core Aspects of our Research
The goal of the Embedded Systems research group is to develop algorithms, concepts and procedures to develop networked embedded systems. Examples include the so called Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) or Industry 4.0. Currently our research consists of the following core aspects:
